“Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.” ~Proverbs 17-1

Proverbs 17:1 is one of my favorite scriptures.  Another way to put it might be to say: Better is a falling down shack in peace, than a mansion on a hill top with continuous nagging.

Who among us would choose to live in splendor – with a constant murmuring madness reverberating continually throughout the walls?  And yet how many of us create such a miserable atmosphere in our own homes?  Harping at our husband to get him to act the way we believe he should.  Nagging at our children to act their age, pick up after themselves, clean their room…nag, nag, nag.  And what does all the nagging and harping get us?  Usually a desire for a quiet place to escape -- away from them and from ourselves.  Come on now – you know it’s the truth.

We’re busy for pete’s sake, and we want help with our busyness!  And most of the time our family – the family we do it all for-- does not seem to get it.  After all, they’re busy too – with school, sport, church activities and just plain living their lives.  We’re often left to feel our lives don’t mean a thing to them.  When they do help, we have to go behind them and redo what they think they did already.  I mean, it goes against everything we are made of to walk by a crumb filled counter or run a dishwasher loaded with food laden plates. It doesn’t hurt their feelings one bit.

Truth be told, though, if our eyes are on God, if we’re looking up like we’re supposed to be, the cares of this world shrink to nil.  If we are truly caring more about what God thinks of us rather than what others think of us (and our home), if we are embracing the fact that this world is temporary and the big picture is the only picture that matters  -- it becomes so much easier to ignore the crumbs, quiet the nagging, and thank the Good Lord that most of us will not be having a dry morsel for dinner.

Thank you God for the roof over my head, for the generous provision and continual blessings that catch and overtake me each day – each one a gift from you.  Thank you for reminding me to look to You, instead of the things of this earth, for when I do the picture becomes so much brighter.  Help me each day to do all things without grumbling or complaining, so my children, my husband and my guests will enter a home filled with peace rather than strife.
