Holy Moly!
But as the One Who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:15-16 AMP
What a mind full that scripture is! My goal for the next few months is to write something on whatever scripture Bible Gateway happens to pick as their 'daily scripture'. I saw this one, and immediately thought to throw that goal in the trash can of my mind and go with another.
When I think of holy, I think of our God who is Holy, who is good, long-suffering, merciful, patient, omniscient, omnipresent, creator of all things, creator of the universe, the creator of time, for crying out loud! I think of holy as an ideal that simply cannot be reached on this earth. I think of holy as perfection.
Imagine being in a crowd, and an amplified voice shouts 'Will all the holy ones, please step forward?' I don't know about you, but I'm thinking someone's off their meds -- both the speaker and the ones who step forward!
To think of myself as holy seems an impossible thing. But then I went to His Word to look a little deeper and it tells me that I am indeed holy, and have been since I invited Him into my heart, to lead, guide and direct my paths. Peter 1:2 says, "God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and His Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ." One of the definitions of holy is 'having a divine quality.' If we have the Spirit, we certainly have the Divine. And He has us.
One of our greatest responsibilities as Christians, and one of the most beneficial I believe, is to believe what God says about us. We are joint heirs with Christ, we are forgiven, we are the righteousness of God in Christ, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we are precious in His sight, and we are holy. Not because of what we have done, but because of what he has done in us.
So while my thoughts, actions and attitude certainly do not always exude holiness, I am holy because His spirit is in me. I am holy because I am His. I am holy because it is written. Which should lead me to be better wife, mother, employee, person, etc. even on my bad days, simply because if God's willing to call me holy, I should be more willing to act in a manner that would please Him. And I guess I'll have to be one of those 'off their meds' people if the holy ones are ever asked to step forward.
