Choose to be Reconciled

That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:19-20 RSV

Before Christ, I was a ball of confusion rolling out of control through this life, doing damage to myself and others that I wasn't even aware I was doing.  I understood God might be there, somewhere in the great beyond, but not right here, with me, desiring only good for my life.

While there's a lot of details we don't know about the fall of man, what we do know is that man died spiritually when he chose to disobey.  Think of what a frustrated parent finally says to the teenager insisting on its own way: "You think you know it all, go ahead have it your way, see where that gets you, but don't say I didn't tell you so".  God gave man the freedom to find out for himself what disobedience would bring.  God's spirit was removed from us.

When we humble ourselves and ask Him to come into our hearts, the relationship is reconciled.  His Spirit is restored to us. We are 'born again' from a spiritual death.  He will not force this because it is freely given love and worship that He desires.  He says, "Choose this day whom ye will serve."

Reconciliation is a wonderful thing, but it is only the beginning. Once the decision is made to be reconciled to our heavenly Father, then it is moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day that one has to choose God's way or their own. Just like those stubborn teens, our nature often wants to rebel even though we know Father knows best.  But the more we submit to His will, and the more we see the positive outcome when we do it His way, the easier it is to say, Yes, Father, I will obey.
