PEACE PROMISES

An often quoted verse of scripture says "...they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up the sword against nation, And never again will they learn war."

Imagine a world where the threat of war was non-existent. A place where nations lived in harmony -- no harping over religious differences, border skirmishes, tariffs and free trade.  No fear of terrorism and nuclear bombs.

But then imagine a world where you got along with your neighbor, or maybe your co-worker -- even your husband and your family.  Imagine a world where you never let anger dictate your actions or your words, a world where you immediately chose forgiveness over retaliation, a world where you chose to be the better person regardless of the slight.

Why would we think it should be possible for nations with completely different cultures and belief systems to live in harmony when many of our own homes and neighborhoods are war zones?

We have reached a place in society where we are unable to agree on the simplest things;  life, gender, bathroom designations!  How can we expect to agree on right and wrong?   How do we expect to get along with entire nations of people when we are unable to get along with one another?

God does indeed promise us that things will be different. That brief verse from Isaiah assures us of a time of peace. But, as is often the case when people use scripture for their own purposes, important details are left out.

And many peoples shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
To the house (temple) of the God of Jacob;
That He may teach us His ways
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For the law will go out from Zion
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

And He will judge between the nations,
And will mediate [disputes] for many peoples;
And they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not lift up the sword against nation,

And never again will they learn war.

Most of God's promises come with work that we have to carry out to get the blessing, but in the case of the full reading of Isaiah 2:3,4 we see it is the work of God that brings about the promise:  The Lord will teach, the Lord will judge, the Lord will say.  He will lead and we will follow.  We will listen.  And Peace will reign.
